How to Select Solids and Turn On Scaling Tendencies

Objective

In OLI Studio, selecting specific solids or turning on scaling tendencies can help you customize your simulation, reduce computation time, and prevent the formation of unwanted solids. This guide outlines the steps to include or exclude solids and calculate scaling tendencies for solids that are removed from the simulation.

Disclaimer: The user interface, calculations, and results displayed in this article are from OLI Studio Version 12.0.0.11. Other software versions may appear different or present slightly distinct results due to continual developments to the software and thermodynamic databanks.

Steps for Selecting Solids and Turning on Scaling Tendencies

  1. Enter Chemistry Data: Start by entering the chemical components into the grid. For example, you might input calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, and sodium chloride.

  2. Access Chemistry Menu: Navigate to the "Chemistry" menu item. A list of available options will appear.

  3. Open Model Options: Select "Model Options..." and then click on the "Phases" tab. By default, OLI Studio will consider an aqueous phase, a vapor phase, and multiple solid phases based on the input chemistry.

  4. Include/Exclude Solid Phases: To control which solid phases are included, click the "Include Solid Phases" checkboxes. This will display a list of available solid phases. Unchecking a box next to a solid will remove it from the calculation, but you can still calculate its scaling tendency by selecting the “Calculate Scaling Tendencies for excluded solids” checkbox. This will give you the scaling tendency without allowing the solid to form. For more information on scaling tendencies, please see this Support Center article.

  5. Confirm Excluded Solids: If you’ve excluded any solid phases, a message will appear in the summary box (e.g., “Excluding 10 solid phases”) to remind you of the changes.

  6. Quick Access to Solids Settings: The easiest way to turn solids on or off is by clicking the "Solids" button located on the toolbar of OLI Studio.

Conclusion

Selecting and managing solid phases in OLI Studio allows you to streamline calculations and prevent unwanted solids from forming, while still tracking their scaling tendencies. By following these steps, you can optimize your simulation for both speed and accuracy.
