CO₂ Impurities Available in MSE and MSE-SRK

Objective

This article delineates the list of impurity species currently available in MSE and MSE-SRK, which are typical of CO2-rich streams in CCTUS applications.

Disclaimer: The following lists pertain to OLI software Version 12.

MSE (V12)

Impurities that may cause acid (sulfuric or nitric) formation and corrosion or elemental sulfur dropout

• H2O

• H2S

• O2

• NOx (N2O, NO, N2O3, NO2, N2O5)

• SOx (SO2, SO3)

Impurities that do not cause acid dropout, but alter the phase behavior

• Alcohols (methanol, monoethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol)

• Hydrocarbons (CH4, C2H6)

• Aldehydes (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde)

• COS

• N2

Potential inhibitors

• Amines (MEA, DEA, DMEA, DMIPA, MDEA, piperazine, DGA, alkyl amines, oxygenated amines)

• NH3 (also a potential solid former, i.e., NH2CO2NH4)

Other impurities, such as heavy metal or non-condensable gases, that cause other transport challenges

• Hg

Solids

• Elemental sulfur

MSE-SRK (V12)

Impurities that may cause acid (sulfuric or nitric) formation and corrosion or elemental sulfur dropout

• H2O

• H2S

Impurities that do not cause acid dropout, but alter the phase behavior

• Alcohols (methanol)

• Some Hydrocarbons

• N2

Other impurities, such as heavy metal or non-condensable gases, that cause other transport challenges

• Hg

Upcoming Software Release

The following impurities will be available in the next MSE release:

Impurities that do not cause acid dropout, but alter the phase behavior

• Light hydrocarbons (C1-C6) interactions with sulfuric acid species

• Ar

Other impurities such as heavy metal or non-condensable gases that cause other transport challenges

• CO

• H2

Solids

• Solid H2SO4 and HNO3

• Salts associated with acid dropout in the presence of other impurities (e.g., ammonium sulfates)

The following impurities will be available in the next MSE-SRK release:

Impurities that may cause acid (sulfuric or nitric) formation and corrosion or elemental sulfur dropout
